Let's see, where do I begin?
Yesterday was the first day of One Young World. They label it "Business Day" We had a number of people coming in and speak to us about the issues facing today's society and earth. We heard from OPEC, Barclays, Shell, Doug Richard, ZEP, HP, and Siemens. All had different perspectives. Siemens sent their African president to present on sustainable cities. It looked ridiculously close to Schneider's pitch.
The most interesting part of the summit is that after these presenters give their prepared PowerPoint speech, the delegates have the chance to ask questions. It was fun to watch these presenters try to dodge the questions. Some did better than others. Many questions were replied to with "I would like to talk to you more about this later. Please come find me." I wanted to ask the Siemens presenter if they use the same 3rd party marketing group as we do. I restrained myself.
We did notice that we are considerably older than the OYW demographic. I may be the youngest in the Schneider group. I would say our average age is about 30. I believe the average age of the entire summit is "college".
Then, we got on a large boat (all 1,500 of us) and went around the lake for two hours. It was nice to get the fresh air. I guess I haven't mentioned, the air was broken in the summit room. They came back after the morning session and said they were cranking it all the way up. This is when I concluded it was broken and not set too high. Their were tons of lights in there or the TV cameras. It was hot.
My air theory was further confirmed when we came back for the opening ceremonies and it was still hot. I hope it will be fixed today. The opening ceremonies were well done. We saw Jamie Oliver, Joss Stone, Prince and Princess of Norway. They also had a performance by the Chinese Idol.
After that they served dinner. Our entire group elected to forgo the dinner at the summit and head to a local restaurant where they could sit down with a drink and not have to stand and eat. Myself and a few others chose to head back to hotel altogether. I had something attached to my body that I called feet at the beginning of the day and at that point, I just wanted a shower. I would have preferred to stay out with the group, but going home was a much better idea.
Yes I have pictures. No, I do not have time to upload them.
